The second edition of the Islands Race is in the history books and it was another good one, with 51 boats registered. First to Finish honors went to
Pendragon VI crossing buoy SD at 0530. SDYC’s own Andy Rasdal / Valkyrie won the IRC/i52 Division and Dennis Pennel / Blue Blazes placed 2nd in the PH 1 division.
Most of the 7 IRC class boats (mostly TP52s) and an impressive 11 boat ORR Sled fleet made it around the course by day break on Saturday. The wind was a moderate 8 to 12 knots over most of the course but in a more northerly direction. Many of the front running boats were faced with a hole on the south end of San Clemente Island at midnight Friday night. Some were able to punch through but several were not and spent several hours becalmed in the lee of the island. As the sun rose over Point Loma Saturday morning, John Tsirimokos and crew aboard the Ayeea X stood watch over the finish line and the steady stream of finishers. Twenty-three of the fifty-one boat fleet finished between 7 and 10:30 am. Just one of the five PH 4 division boats were able to complete the course with the final finisher crossing just six minutes before the 5 pm deadline.
Hospitality for finishers was available in the bar beginning at 6 am followed by a great awards party complete with live music and BBQ arranged on the sailwash lawn. Many thanks go out to John X and his crew for watching over the finish, and to Andy La Dow for co-chairing the event with NHYC’s David Clark.
